10 key skills you need to succeed in business
Having been at the coalface of business for over 30 years, I’ve seen many business owners succeed and many fail. In my experience, there’s no simple answer as to why, but there are a number of common business skills that seem to be shared by those who make business look easy.
1. A laser-sharp focus on goals
Focus on goals, and know where you want to end up. I believe this is the single most critical factor for success. If you know where you want to get to, it’s so much easier — all you have to do is fill in the gaps backwards. I think about my goals every day, and every hour I spend at my desk gets me closer to my goals.
2. Not afraid to toot your own horn
Embrace marketing and get to know how to sell yourself and your business. You may be a great at what you do, but if you can’t market your business, you’ll never make it. Keep on marketing too, even if you don’t need any more customers or clients. Customers move away, lose interest, die, or think you don’t care about them, so you need to be constantly looking for new customers — and ideally those of a better quality with a fatter wallet!
